About Cottingham

Robert Cottingham (1935 – ) is a highly regarded American Pop-artist and a first generation photo-realist. In the 1960’s, inspired by the urban landscape of Southern California, Cottingham began his painting career. He established himself in the early 1970’s among renowned artists such as Richard Estes and Chuck Close. Born in Brooklyn in 1935, Cottingham studied at the Pratt Institute and began a brief career in Graphic Design which later inspired his painting of American urban signage.
